Besides providing clean drinking water without electricity, Berkey Water Systems also need neither plumbing installation nor a specific water pressure. This is because they use the force of gravity and the technologically advanced Black Berkey filters to do all the hard work while also saving you a huge amount of money.
All Berkey models can purify both treated water and untreated raw water from streams, rain, and stagnant ponds. They have even been approved by international organizations for use in countries where the water supply does not conform to the standards that are applied in the U.S.
There are six counter top models to choose from and their capacity ranges from 1.5 – 6 gallons. The most popular family size and top seller is the Big Berkey.
What will the Big Berkey remove from water?
The Big Berkey comes with 2 Black Berkey Filters and can hold a maximum of 4 of them. The filtration time varies according to how many filters you choose to install. Even when you use it with only 2 filters they entirely remove pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites. Harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides VOC’s, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes are also extracted. There is a noticeable reduction of nitrates, nitrites and unhealthy minerals, especially lead and mercury. This is an impressive performance.
All Berkey Water Systems have the additional option to add PF2 Water Filters into the lower chamber. These filter arsenic and fluoride which are higher in some areas of the country and a concern for residents there.
The filters do not strip the water of minerals, but only pollutants and you will always have great tasting, odorless drinking water on hand.
What does the Big Berkey look like?
The Big Berkey is constructed from highly polished, 304 stainless steel and comes with two Black Berkey Filters. Included with the Big Berkey is a lid, spigot and a rubber gasket base and 2 blocking plugs for the extra filter openings.
It has a storage capacity of 2.25 gallons and is the perfect size for an average family of up to four people. It has a height of 21” and a diameter of 8.5” and weighs nine pounds when empty.
Like all the Berkey countertop models, the Big Berkey has an upper and lower chamber. The water to be purified is poured into the upper chamber and as it filters through it settles into the bottom chamber which has a spigot for easy dispensing of the purified water. With two filters installed, the flow rate is 4 gallons per hour, which adds up to 60 gallons per day.
In the event that you want to transport or store the Big Berkey, you can nest the upper chamber within the lower one and its height is 13”.
It makes perfect sense for Big Berkey, and any other Berkey owners, to keep spare filters on hand in case of any emergencies.
When will Big Berkey filters need replacing?
Depending on the amount of water filtered daily they will probably only need to be replaced after 12-24 month or 6000 gallons if you are using two filters. The filters can be cleaned once in a while to help maintain them in good condition. This can be done by cleaning them with a kitchen sponge as you run them under warm water.
Enjoy the purest and clearest water at a fraction of the price of buying bottled water or using any other type of water filtration system. It has been estimated that the cost of water over the lifetime of your Big Berkey will not surpass 2 cents per day.
There is a big difference between filtration and purification of water. The Black Berkey Filter Elements are the key to making the Berkey Water System into a complete purification system.
