What are the reasons for hereditary hair loss?

There are three stages in a hair cycle:
- In the first stage, the scalp hair is constantly growing. This is known as the anagen stage. In this phase, your hair grows around 1–2cm per month. Approximately 90% of your hair is in this phase at any one time. It persists between 2–5 years.
- The second stage is called the catagen stage, which is when growth ends. Around 1–3% of your scalp hair is in this stage at any one time. It remains for 2–3 weeks.
- The third stage is named the telogen stage. This is a resting state, and it remains between 1–4 months. Nearly 10% of your scalp hair is in this stage at any one time.
At the completion of its resting stage, a hair goes in a shedding phase, which generally results in the increase of a new hair. When a hair is dropped, it’s succeeded by a new hair from the same hair follicle placed just beneath the skin layer.
Male or female ancestral hair loss is caused by genetics or hormonal controls. It is also known as androgenetic alopecia because it is influenced by the hormones called androgens.
Your chance of hereditary hair loss increases if you have families who have experienced hair loss. Your genetic draft for hair loss will be dependent on things like:
- how old you are when hair loss starts
- how quick you lose hair
- the design and reach of your hair loss.
Male hereditary hair loss
Hereditary baldness in males is also known as male pattern baldness. It is more obvious with age. The baldness affects different populations at different times and accounts for 99% of hair loss in men.
Hair loss begins in men from around the age of 30 but could happen at any age past adolescence. How suddenly or slowly baldness develops, and the kind of hair loss, appear to be checked by the genes you acquired from your parents.
Your genes influence how receptive your scalp is to a hormone known as dihydrotestoterone (DHT), which reduces the growth phase of your hair. Your hair follicles also grow smaller in response to DHT, and subsequently, your hair production grows fewer and more refined.
Female hereditary hair loss
Female hereditary hair loss is called female pattern baldness. It can influence women at any age but occurs more commonly after menopause. It begins typically about the age of 30, becomes obvious about the age of 40, and more obvious after menopause. By the age of 50, almost half of women feel some degree of hair reducing.
It is also believed that female hereditary hair loss is determined by heredity and the androgen hormones, although the connection is not as strong as in male genetic hair loss.
In female inherited hair loss, more delicate hairs with less colour are conceived, and hairs that are in the resting (telogen) stage fall out more quickly.

The design of hair loss is different in male hereditary hair loss and female genetic hair loss.
Male pattern hair loss
In males, baldness normally begins with gradual thinning at the hairline (receding hairline), accompanied by the appearance of a thinned or bald spot on the top of your head.
Female pattern hair loss
Women with genetic baldness unusually develop bald patches. Rather, you experience a wide thinning of their hair, particularly over the top of your head or sides while maintaining a frontal hairline.
