5 Tips to Protect Your Dry Skin From Acne

People with oily skin are highly prone to getting acne. However, some people with dry skin also tend to suffer from frequent breakouts. Because of this, aside from dealing with the problems of having oily skin, they also have to add acne to their list of dermatological woes.

If you have dry skin and are also prone to getting breakouts, getting the best acne treatment for dry skin recommended by dermatologists is the most effective way of dealing with this particular skin problem. This way, you will be sure you to get a treatment plan that will target acne and dry skin. The treatment will also prevent acne from coming back.

And to avoid having breakouts again, here are five helpful tips to follow:

1.    Always hydrate your skin

When you have dry skin, it is important that you keep your skin moisturized.

However, you shouldn’t simply dab on any moisturizing cream. Choose a product that combats both dryness and helps rid the skin of acne. This means selecting a product with ingredients that hydrate the skin and treats acne.

It is also best to apply moisturizer to the face first before applying any acne cream or medication. By doing so, you will help prime and hydrate the skin, and reduce the risk of developing irritation from the medication.

2.    Wash your face twice a day

Wash your face in the morning and at night; avoid doing it in-between. This is because when you over-wash the skin, you may strip away small amounts of oil that your skin needs to protect it from dryness.

Using plain water is acceptable and even preferable when you have dry skin. But if you feel you are not cleansing your face enough, use cream-based, non-foaming cleansers instead of soap and other products.

This is because harsh facial cleansers dry your skin out quickly but won’t clear acne faster. Non-foaming cleansers or cream cleansers, on the other hand, are typically less drying than foaming options.

3.    Use sunscreen daily

Acne is essentially skin wounds. As such, they need to be protected from UV rays which can cause further damage and make acne more prone to leaving behind dark spots or blemishes.

The best sunscreens for breakout-prone dry skin are the ones that are natural and non-comedogenic. These are products that do not clog your pores and cause irritation, blemishes, and acne.

Additionally, choose one that contains titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide since it will be gentler on already dry and irritated skin. And if possible, buy one that is lightweight and non-greasy.

4.    Do not use harsh facial scrubs

Exfoliating can remove dead skin cells and other potential pore blockers that can cause acne. However, over-exfoliating can aggravate breakouts. It can irritate your skin and cause small tears or wounds which will allow bacteria to cause acne.

And if you continue to use harsh scrubs and exfoliators over existing breakouts, you will cause the infection to spread to other parts of your face.

If you have dry skin, it is best to avoid exfoliating your skin altogether. But if you still need to, try using a gentler physical exfoliator such as facial toning pads. These are exfoliating products which have gently threaded sides so you won’t go overboard using them.

5.    Use products with organic honey

Aside from being an effective natural cough remedy, honey also offers various benefits to the skin.  For starters, it has anti-aging, exfoliating, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. Moreover, honey is a humectant, which means that it helps the skin lock in moisture. Additionally, due to its antibacterial properties, it can reduce acne.

If you have dry skin that’s prone to acne, include honey in your treatment regimen.

This doesn’t mean, though, that you should apply honey on your face straight from the jar. If you want to use it as a moisturizer, mix honey with coconut oil. To treat breakouts, combine raw honey with turmeric and apply it directly on acne at night.

You can also use skincare products that already contain honey. These include honey-infused facial sheet masks and moisturizing creams.

With the right treatment program and a few simple changes to your skincare routine, you will be able to keep acne at bay. More importantly, you will have supple, smooth, and clear skin again.
